Gorilla Zkittlez RDWC/MegaCrop

Post by Nezzy » Thu Jan 23, 2020 1:10 am

The time has finally come to get this show on the road!! Between the cold spell we had here and the stresses of trade school I've been behind on my hobbies. I built this system last fall and have spent the last month running the unit filled with nutrients. No leaks. Water temps are stable. My clones have JUST started putting out roots so this weekend they will be transplanted. On with the specs.

Environment:
4x5 Dual Chamber grow tent. I'm just in love with these dual sided tents. It allows me to keep my small garden veg and flower in one area. Bonsai mother's and clones on the veg compartment and a sealed 4x4 flower area.

Lighting:
100-150w mixed spectrum florescent for clones and mom's.
400w Metal Halide for Veg
600w air cooled HPS for flower.

Medium: DIY RDWC 4 site unit with 30 gal total water capacity. 3" net pots filled with hydroton. 950gph air pump connected to the large can style air stones. I'll be using tap water this grow which is also a first as I always use RO for ease of ph stability.

Nutrients/Additives:
Strictly MegaCrop throughout the entire grow. I do have the bud explosion but I'll try that next run if I see the need for it. I'll be using my homemade RezClear to keep my reservoir sterile and my roots clean. I have calmag on hand if needed as well.

Ventilation and fans are a go. I won't get into their specs as i don't know them off hand I just know they suck and blow ha ha. I will also be installing a 4x4 scrog over the canopy once they establish themselves. That's about all my exhausted, heavily medicated brain can remember for now. Pull up a chair and join me on this adventure!!!

This is NOT the update I was hoping to share. I have been hit with some bad luck all at once it seems starting with my clones. I've been having difficulty getting my favorite Gorilla Zkittlez mother's to clone. I don't know if she's sick, or just at the end of her days but I cannot get her clones to root anymore and I just tossed 12 pitiful looking sticks in the garbage.

Onto the RDWC unit.... Everything on it was running smooth and stable. Couldn't ask for better parameters to be honest temps, ph etc all perfect. I never checked it yesterday but all was good the day prior. Today I on the rez lid and take my readings, all is good. Flip open one of the grow buckets and I notice a fuzzy growth of my stones!!! Further examination led me to find it on the return line openings and the water in line openings from the reservoir. It looks like shit, but has NO smell whatsoever. It seems pretty easy to wipe off whatever it's attached to but I don't know about the air stones.

Im draining everything as I write this and will give everything a good bleaching and scrubbing. My question is Is this root rot bacteria? Is there more to sterilizing and preventing this from coming back than a bleach/scrub/refresh? Any input would be appreciated.

Do you use RO water in the unit? Even when I use RO water if I don't change it for 3 weeks in my water cloner I notice a similar gunge on it...how often do you change out the water? Are you running a sterile unit or do you use beneficial bacteria?

I always have ran RO in the past. This round was tap, which hasn't posed a problem in the past. I normally change out my water every 10 days and run a sterile rez. I use a pool shock solution that hasn't failed me yet. I would like to try using bennies one day but I just don't know much about them.

After some investigating while rinsing the unit out I noticed the heaviest concentration s of the sludge were in the reservoir itself. Now I did not have an air stone in there so the water wasn't really agitated much in the rez itself. Could this possibly be were my source began?

If you are using tap water you should be prepared for that kind of stuff. If you are using megacrop it will leave a sludge for sure. I don't really know what to say other than to hope for the best I don't really think that particular grunge would do any harm but who can say. Rdwc is very particular. It's why I don't do it anymore

Hey man hope things are going better for your grow! Do you have plants in now? I have a similar sludge with megacrop in my reservoir. It doesn't seem to do any harm at all but I am in ebb and flow. I was never able to keep my res sterile and always thought I was using too much or not enough. I tried bennies in RDWC but did not do it right. Now I use SouthernAG Garden Fungicide in the res in my ebb and flow and it works good and has seemed to increase yield in my testing..

Hey thanks for checking in @Jefferson! I think I may ha e jumped the gun on the sludge. After many hours of browsing and asking the general consensus was Mega Crop can leave sludge. Some folks swear the bacteria and enzyme route is the only way to hydro especially with MC but I also seen enough proof to bust that theory. With my luck I'd end up accidentally breeding a super strain of E.coli or some damn thing 😂I do however know that my unit was scrubbed, sanitized and were back in action.

I planted 4 GSC autos last Friday and last night 2 of 4 surfaced followed by the other 2 today. Currently I'm not running anything in my rez nutrient wise except for some rez clear and a 100ppms-ish of cal/mag. Lights are on, timers are set now were off to the races!

***I apologize for the sideways pictures. If I could fix it or knew what I was doing wrong I'd fix it 🤷‍♂️***

Hi Jeff. Life sure has been difficult up to this point between totally losing my entire crop, mother plants etc to now this "virus." But the strong prevail and I'm back.

In my hydro tent I have some GG4 autos that are doing wel so far. I gave up on tap water as I was using PH down at an uncomfortable rate just to get the water to stabilize which also took several days at best to get it there. RO has never let me down and with Megacrop I only need 1-3ml of ph down for an entire 30g rez and it stays stable for DAYS.

Also pictured is the start of my outdoor seedlings. This year in running my usual Rainbow Skunk. It's perfect for my Alberta growing conditions and never let's me down. The other seedlings are @Zoicster's Warped Cookies which sprouted above soil in less than 72 hours. Fast fast germination.

Hope everyone is doing ok given the current global status. Thanks for checking in too Jeff, it's good to be back here. 🙂

Those are looking really healthy man. Bummer about losing your crop and mothers. I've been fighting powdered mildew in my latest crop...4 weeks into flowering so I don't want to use anything other than heat to try and kill it at this point. I had a really good result last crop though.

PM is not fun. Once I had it I was never able to completely get rid of it until i tore everything down and bleached it all. Although powdered milk and water was able to get me to harvest. Sounds odd but it worked better than anything else I tried. My grow store guy swears by sulfur burners but I dont know much about them.

PM is definitely a bitch. I have a bad track record handling bleach so I used a UVC to sterilize my tents, closet and pots that had soil and were involved in the PM infested grows. I feel it worked like a charm, no issues since, and the bulb was only about $20.

I have a sulfur burner and used it up until week 2F. After that it is useless unless you want Sulfur tasting buds lol. Same with baking soda which I was using with success until this latest crop...Apparently it dies at 95F so I have been heating the container to 100f for a couple hours at a time. Seems to be preventing the spread so far, fingers crossed. Zoic's idea of a UVC light is a good one I should look at buying a decent one.

I wonder if it disturbs flowering? I guess you could run it with the lights on too. Did you ever try it on your plants?

No, I did not use it on any plants, and I was diligent at not exposing myself as well. I just hung it and left it in the enclosed are for 24 hoursish. You can buy lights that are safe for plants and human tissue but they are less effective. I can tell you that it stunk of ozone when I turned off the light and opened the tent.

One thing with the heat treatments is it does burn the plant a little since the stomata close at 95f or so. I have noticed some yellowing leaves since I did it 2x now. Anyways I added a new fan so I'm pretty hopeful I can control it.. :?

Hello fellow friends. I have some spare time and a few questions so away we go. This grow has been interesting from the start. First off im using my new RDWC system in her maiden voyage and in her i have 4 autoflowers. 3 GG4 and one white widow. Everything seemed to be doing OK, and i say that lightly until I switched from Metal Halide to HPS. All the leaves have serious spotting, which comes on fast and in a matter of a few days they'll go from nice and green to spotty, to literally falling off the plant. Growth has stopped in 2 plants while the other 2 seem to be growing albeit slowwww. I did a whole 30g reservoir swap about a week ago and the crop as a whole doesn't seem to be doing much of anything now. Not dying but not growing either. Can plants stall in hydro? Or at all?

My specs are as follows:

Water: 30gal of RO water (2ppm from the jug)
Nutrients: 3grams/gal of MegaCrop
Lighting: 400w HPS set at 18/6 the entire grow.
Humidity: 40-50rH
Temp: 21 day 19c at night consistently.
Water Temp: 17-19c consistantly.
Ph: 5.6-6.0
TDS: 400-420ppm @3g/gal and they eat about 10-20ppm a day or 2.

I feel like something happened internally as everything was fine UNTIL I switched bulbs. My entire house smelled like Gorilla Glue even with an old carbon filter on and now my plants smell like salt and pepper/metal kind of smell. I do feel like this grow was against me from the start as im doing 4 individual seeds which all have different feeding requirements but i didn't think it would be this drastic. Does anyone have any insight or pointers to help me get this girls back on track?

Looks like a mag/calcium deficiency. Only 3G/g MC? I would go at least 5 grams if that is all you are using. Usually in hydro I add 150ppm (@50 scale) calmag + 4-5 grams MC, but I use LED so you may not need the calmag.

I will try some calmag. It does look like a calcium deficiency and the reason I didn't up the food is I was starting to get some dark green plants with a good amount of clawing happening at 2.75g per gallon which made me hesitant. I cannot wait to run clones in here next go and then I'll be able to play with the nutrients a lot better.

For my ebb and flow with LED I use 150PPM calmag (+ the lake water is 100ppm) @50 scale and 4-5 grams mega crop. Around week 5F I cut down the MC to 4G/g and also add 1/3 strength 0-50-30 to make the buds denser. Now I don't have the calmag problem any more, I used to have it all the time until I figured it out, but for me it was only after going from HPS to white LEDs ..

My next rez change is due this coming weekend and my new bag of MC and Calimag should be here Friday so I will try and see if I can get this grow sorted before they're done. Thanks for chiming in @Jefferson, I always appreciate your time and advice.

The other thing boss, is check your underside of leaves for mites and webs. Does look a bit like that too but you would see webs that far gone. Anyways calmag/lack of nutes is my first thought.

Hello S&P friends. I do apologize for not being regular with my updates. Covid has really played heavy and has impacted my life in many ways. I dipped into a level of depression that was borderline fatal had my wife and kids not been the strong super heros they are. Moving along and in better spirits.

I was able to pull off my autoflower grow. I learned alot along the way which is the main thing. Im still trying to get the hang of this Megacrop stuff and havent decided if i fully appreciate it yet or not but it does amazing things for my outdoor crop which impresses me big time.

My harvest was 8oz of smokable buds with 2oz of trim and popcorns. Next round which is in the tent and going ok is the Warped Cookies I was gifted on this site. They were sure difficult to clone but alas i got 8 out 15 to root and things are cooking along now. I will definintly do more on my part to be current with this new grow as well. Hope everyone on here is enjoying their summer and life is going smooth.

Thank you! Unfortunately this batch of GG4 isn't my flavour. Although its very good, I even have a difficult time finishing a whole gram some times which is rare. But its all THC and effects with very little medicinal relief. I made some 75mg cookies and 2 would normally put me to sleep but this stuff is like a redbull lol. Oh well live and learn right. Ive got good hopes for the Warped Cookies whose absolutely loving life in the rdwc unit.

Oh no that's unfortunate man. I absolutely use edibles for sleeping and it really sucks when I make a batch from some weed that doesn't help me sleep. What strains have you found work best for you? I found if I grow a CBD strain and mix it with a THC strain then I sleep the best.

I like one-to-one strains myself. Now saying that I haven't grown very many. Harlequin CBD is one I have right now but it's 20 to 1 I believe.
